Nowadays, social media has become a hot topic for debate competitions and has had a more negative impact on every human being, especially since lockdown has become too serious.
COVID-19 had a huge impact on mental health as well as physical health, in which excessive use of social media plays a major role.
It might be surprising to you, but it’s true that Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, doesn’t allow his children to use Facebook or any other social media because he is more aware of the pros and cons of social media.
This is the dark side of social media. Simply watch the documentary below to see how social media uses you and your emotions as a marketing and revenue-generating tool.

Here’s why Social Media Sucks:
1. Insecurities:
While posting any picture or event, have you ever observed your own psyche? What’s exactly going on in your mind? Have you observed the insecurities of external appearances, fear of losing social connections, loneliness, and so on? How could these kinds of emotions set you free and make you happy? Think about it for a moment.

Look at how perfect my life is, what kind of food I consume, where I travel, and everything else. Projecting a very happy and beautiful life on social media is completely opposite to what’s actually happening in real life.
However, we are not enjoying the process and are not present in the moment. Yes, it’s great that we can connect with individuals from all over the world, but we’re also alienated from ourselves and the real people in our lives. Regrettably, we are becoming lost in this digital world, which leads to chronic psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety.
2. Impact on Productivity:
You are not a public figure. You are not a celebrity. You are not a model to promote products. And not even every person is curious to know about your personal life. Then why are you so crazy, making so much effort to put all your private life on social media?

Don’t you think we’re entrusting our lives to someone? Comments and likes have no bearing on your abilities, your source of existence, your happiness, or the goodness of your relationship. All I’m saying is that we waste our time, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously, on social media, which eventually affects productivity.
That is why people become more depressed due to the fakeness of social media and being caught in low self-esteem and comparison games.
3. Impatience and restlessness:
Social media has an impact on attention span. We’re merely looking for instant gratification by scrolling up and down the screen.

Constantly checking emails, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter notifications makes you impatient and restless over a period of time.
When the notification bell rings, our hands instinctively move to our phones. Our minds become dull and agitated. This causes major mental health problems, leading to people being more violent and, in extreme situations, attempting suicide or killing others.
4. Physical cramps:
Muscle tightness and body stiffness have become major physical health issues due to the posture of the body when using technology or social media.
Scientifically, the average human head weighs between 10 to 11 pounds. This equates to around 8% of a human’s body weight and when we use our smartphones or any device in a forward neck position, it causes cervical pain in the neck, termed as “tech neck or text neck.”

This results in the lengthening of neck muscles and the shortening of chest muscles, resulting in the body’s inability to provide adequate oxygen in order to maintain good health.
To avoid muscular spasms, instead of watching videos, listen to audio and utilize voice search instead of typing. Make sure your phone’s screen is aligned with your eyes.
5. Sleep and memory loss:
Scientifically, the circadian rhythm regulates sleep patterns and, as a result of excessive screen time, the circadian rhythm is disrupted, your retina is damaged, and ultimately it affects the release of melatonin, which is a neurotransmitter or hormone that helps you sleep.

Studies have shown that in the evening, your body temperature sets down and your pineal gland produces melatonin in your body between 10 pm to 2 am for a good sleep.
As a result of insufficient sleep, your body becomes fatigued, your immune system suffers, and you are unable to concentrate well on your work. It also affects memory loss in the long run.
How to beat social media addiction:
1. Setting priority:
There’s a saying, “Good things happen when you set your priorities straight.” Once you are clear about what your purpose is and where you are investing your energy and time, things start to change.

List down your priorities and put them on a wall, which will make you aware of your goals and purpose. Set your daily targets and try to explore new things in life. Build new habits that create your identity and make you feel content. Take charge of your life.
2. Turn Off all Notifications:
Turn off all the bell notifications that disturb you all the time. Delete the application that you rarely use and no longer need.

Don’t try to reply to all the messages that are not important to you; instead, refer to calls.
3. Fix a time:
Time is more important in life than money. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Value your time. Use your smartphones or social media when it’s necessary.
For instance, if you want to send some notes or any documents to your friend or colleague, use mail instead of WhatsApp texts so that there is no chance of checking or reading other unnecessary messages.

Use no social media or electronic devices in the morning because the stress hormone cortisol is at its maximum levels around 7 a.m. Use your morning time to calm yourself down. Start doing mindful activities like exercise, yoga, or meditation.
If you enjoy being sociable, there is no need to quit. Instead, set aside time for social media and don’t use it excessively.
4. Dopamine detox:
When we use social media or play a game, the feel-good hormone “Dopamine” begins to flow, dulling our minds and making us ignorant of our surroundings.

That’s why once a week, take a break from social media, just like how we do fasting on certain occasions, and spend a little time with your family, friends, and nature.
If I were to summarize the entire post in one statement, I would say, “Don’t use social media to impress people; use it to influence people.”
